Harrison Broadband Advisory Committee

The Town of Harrison is in the process of learning more about our current and future needs for high-speed broadband internet access and selecting a community-wide solution to meet these needs. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), high speed broadband internet has a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 3 Mbps although higher speed requirements are being discussed at both the state and federal levels. We know that not all locations in town have even the minimum level of service. The Town has formed a committee to determine the current status of internet access throughout the Town, to identify what gaps may exist in the infrastructure and service levels and to research what options might be available to address those gaps.

Some of the questions we hope to answer:

  • What is the current availability of internet access in the Town, broken down by road and by provider?

  • How many residents have no access to high-speed broadband internet service and what are their locations?

  • Based on discussions with broadband providers (wired and wireless), what expansion could be expected in the next 2 to 4 years without any intervention or assistance from the Town?

  • What would be the expected costs to enable all residents to have access to broadband internet services?

  • Are there opportunities to secure funding to expand broadband coverage?

  • What models(ownership, operating, business) have been successfully applied by other Towns?

  • Committee process

    • Assessment Phase (August 2020 - May 2021)

      • Organize advisory committee

      • Identify Internet-related assets and resources available in the town (see link on Links page)

      • Conduct survey to identify current usage and issues (see link on Links page)

      • Identify current gaps in service and preliminary options

      • Recommend to board the role of town relative to broadband infrastructure

    • Feasibility Phase (August 2021 - Jan 2022) (click to view plan)

      • Identify future internet-related needs and opportunities

      • Evaluate community-wide broadband options (technical, operational, business and funding choices)

      • Make recommendations to board on best available option for community-wide, affordable broadband

    • Deployment/Implementation Phase (tbd)
